sui dynasty: 581-618
The Sui Dynasty only lasted through two emperors. It was founded by Emperor Wendi, who reunited North and South China after the Han Dynasty fell. The only major accomplishment in this time period was the completion of the Great Canal, which provided easy access for trade between the urban north and the rural south. Almost a million peasants died completing the massive waterway, and they eventually revolted, overthrowing the Sui Dynasty. The official end of the dynasty came in 618, when a member of the Imperial Court assassinated the second Sui emperor.
